As technology brands expand their support ecosystems, understanding how consumers evaluate device care and protection plans has become essential to improving plan relevance, customer engagement, and support strategy. To build stronger Technology Protection Plan Consumer Insights, a worldwide technology company partnered with us on a multi-market qualitative study exploring purchase behavior, plan perceptions, and decision-making drivers across the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany, and Thailand.

This initiative combined structured qualitative research on extended warranty and protection plans with in-depth interviews to better understand the motivations, barriers, and behaviors shaping protection plan decisions. By speaking directly with consumers across different usage experiences, the study generated valuable device care insights into how device owners evaluated protection plans, how past experiences influenced perception, and what factors shaped purchase, cancellation, or non-purchase decisions across global markets.

The Challenge

For technology brands, decisions around device care and protection plans are shaped by far more than price alone. Consumers often weigh product value, perceived risk, past experiences, trust in the brand, and the practical usefulness of the plan before deciding whether it is worth purchasing. Understanding these behaviors requires deep consumer perception tech analysis rooted in real ownership experiences, not just broad feedback.

The client wanted to understand the factors influencing purchase, cancellation, and non-purchase behavior across different consumer groups. This included comparing the views of current plan users, former users, and non-buyers, while identifying the barriers and decision points shaping behavior in each market. Delivering this level of clarity required a localized qualitative approach capable of uncovering both practical and emotional influences across varied ownership journeys, supported by clear purchase decision analysis across international markets.

What We Did

To capture first-hand consumer perspectives, we designed a multi-market qualitative research program centered on one-hour in-depth interviews. This approach helped uncover detailed customer experience insights into how consumers evaluated device care plans, what shaped their expectations, and how different ownership experiences influenced decision-making.

We interviewed participants across the United Kingdom, South Korea, Germany, and Thailand, ensuring visibility into both shared themes and market-level differences. Respondents were recruited based on specific product ownership criteria and included current protection plan users, former users who had canceled, and consumers who had never purchased coverage.

All interviews were conducted via Zoom in the native language, with video not required and no simultaneous translation needed. Each market included 12 respondents, with every interview lasting 60 minutes. This approach generated strong device ownership insights into how consumers assessed plan value, weighed trade-offs, and formed protection-related decisions.

The Impact of the Research

The study gave the client a deeper understanding of how consumers across four markets evaluated and experienced device care and protection plans. It revealed the motivations behind purchase, the reasons some consumers chose not to buy coverage, and the factors that led others to cancel after enrollment. These findings delivered strong warranty insights and valuable device care insights into how plan value was judged across different ownership experiences and market contexts.

Key outcomes included:

  • A stronger understanding of the factors influencing purchase, cancellation, and non-purchase behavior

  • Deeper visibility into how trust, pricing, and relevance shaped plan evaluation across markets

  • Actionable customer experience insights to refine plan design, communication, and support strategy

  • Better direction for improving protection plan relevance across diverse consumer segments

Grounded in direct consumer feedback, the research gave the client a stronger foundation for improving protection plan experiences and shaping future strategy across markets. Contact us to uncover the consumer perspectives that drive smarter product, support, and protection plan decisions.
