United States
A specialized nutrition brand partnered with us to understand the specialized nutrition drink purchase journey among repeat Amazon buyers in the United States. The research focused on consumers who had personally chosen Amazon as their purchase channel, including users of the client brand as well as competitor products.
It also looked at the needs and motivations behind these purchases, how personal health or nutrition requirements shaped product choice, and what influenced consumers to return to the category more than once. By speaking directly with repeat buyers, the research built a better picture of nutrition drink purchase behavior on Amazon, including the relationship between brand choice, channel preference, and repeat purchase.
The Challenge
The challenge was to understand what was driving repeat purchases of specialized nutrition drinks in a category where product choice was closely tied to personal health and nutrition needs. The client also needed to understand the consumer motivations for specialized nutrition drinks, including why Amazon became the preferred purchase channel for some respondents.
Key areas of focus included:
What first led consumers to choose a specialized high-calorie nutrition drink.
Reasons for returning to Amazon for repeat purchases.
Differences between purchasers of the client brand and competitor products such as Ensure Max Protein and Boost Very High Calorie.
How medical treatment, difficulty with oral consumption, or the need to maintain or gain weight shaped product choice.
The role of repeat purchase in consumers’ ongoing nutrition needs.
Differences between people buying for themselves and the limited caregiver perspective in the sample.
How Amazon channel choice for nutrition products worked alongside brand choice and repeat buying.
The research needed to connect the reason for entering the category with the product and channel choices that followed, giving the client a more complete view of the purchase decision.
What We Did
We recruited a carefully defined group of repeat buyers of specialized nutrition drinks for video depth interviews in the United States. The sample was built around consumers with direct, recent category experience, allowing the research to focus on real purchase journeys rather than general perceptions.
The study included:
8 completed video depth interviews.
6 purchasers of the client’s specialized high-calorie nutrition drink and 2 purchasers of competitor products.
Respondents who had purchased the relevant product on Amazon within the previous 12 months.
Participants who had made at least two purchases during that period.
Consumers who had personally chosen Amazon as the place to buy the product.
Products purchased specifically for oral consumption.
A mix of nutrition needs linked to medical treatment, difficulty with oral consumption, and maintaining or gaining weight later in life.
A primarily direct-user sample, with only limited caregiver participation.
60-minute webcam-enabled interviews conducted through Forsta.
Rolling recruitment over six weeks to identify and qualify the required profiles.
The tightly screened sample allowed the client to hear from consumers who had repeatedly made the product and channel choices at the center of the research, adding useful context around nutrition drink brand choice and repeat buying.
The Impact of Research
