A worldwide frozen food company partnered with us to conduct QSR frozen food product testing with QSR owners and managers across three APAC markets. The study focused on how foodservice decision-makers assessed product taste, texture, flavour, aroma, cost, and operational suitability after controlled onsite preparation and tasting.

The research was built around in-person product testing, not general concept feedback. Since QSR adoption depends on preparation consistency, serving quality, equipment compatibility, speed of execution, and menu economics, the study captured immediate sensory testing along with operator-led feedback on barriers that could affect market introduction.

The Challenge

Frozen food products for QSR channels must perform under commercial kitchen conditions, where taste alone is not enough to secure adoption. A product may deliver strong sensory appeal, but still face barriers if it requires complex handling, produces inconsistent frying output, has poor holding quality, unsuitable portioning, or pricing that does not fit operator margins.

The client required practical insight into:

• QSR owner and manager ratings on taste, texture, flavour, aroma, and overall product acceptability.
• Fit with existing foodservice preparation routines.
• Operator interpretation of cost in relation to yield, portioning, and menu viability.
• Product or process issues that could restrict adoption in QSR environments.
• Market-entry considerations across Australia, Indonesia, and Japan.

The study also required strict product handling to support reliable food product testing. Frozen samples had to be shipped to centralized locations, stored at the correct temperature, prepared onsite, served immediately, and evaluated under controlled conditions to protect product integrity and strengthen foodservice operator research across all three markets.

What We Did

We designed a multi-market in-person QSR product testing program supported by local partners in each country. Facility selection was guided by the client’s requirements for deep fryers, preparation flow, room layout, respondent movement, and onsite discussion setup.

The study included:

• 45 recruited QSR owners and managers across three markets.
• 15 foodservice operators targeted per country.
• Centralized in-person product testing in Australia, Indonesia, and Japan.
• Facility screening for deep fryer availability, layout suitability, and client specifications.
• Frozen product shipment to approved country-level testing locations.
• Sample storage at the required temperature until preparation.
• Immediate product serving after cooking for sensory evaluation.
• Client-provided surveys for structured post-tasting feedback.
• Moderated discussion around product fit, cost, and launch barriers.
• 90-minute sessions combining onsite evaluation and virtual focus group input.
• Fieldwork completed between November and December 2022.

This setup allowed respondents to assess the products under conditions closer to commercial foodservice use. The immediate post-tasting survey captured sensory response, while the discussion explored preparation practicality, equipment fit, portion expectations, cost acceptability, and possible obstacles to QSR adoption.

The Impact of the Research

The study helped the client evaluate both sensory performance and food service readiness across three APAC markets. Through our food service market research, the client gained a grounded view of how QSR operators responded to the product after tasting and where operational, cost, or preparation-related concerns could affect market entry.
