An international food producer partnered with us to understand how consumers navigate meat product choices in everyday shopping and meal planning. The study focused on meat product research around purchase occasions, brand expectations, flavour preferences, and the cues that influence selection across the category.
Using a digital diary approach, the research captured behaviour closer to real food routines, helping the client build stronger meat consumer insights around category needs, product choice, household usage, and expectations from brands.
The Challenge
Meat product choices sit within a broader food planning context, where shoppers balance household needs, taste, preparation, price, quality, and brand trust. The challenge was to understand the purchase behaviour behind these everyday trade-offs and the occasions that move consumers from consideration to choice.
The client required insight into:
Meat product purchase habits across everyday food routines.
Occasions that influence product selection and repeat purchase.
The role of brand, flavour, quality, and preparation expectations.
Shopper evaluation of different options within the meat category.
Decision cues that influence consideration before purchase.
The research required category-relevant respondents who could provide detailed feedback based on actual purchase behaviour rather than general food preferences. This helped build a more grounded view of consumer behaviour across recurring shopping and consumption occasions.
What We Did
We designed a 7-day online culture lab using a digital diary methodology. Respondents were recruited from a proprietary panel, screened against the required criteria, and invited to participate in the online activity board.
The study included:
64 qualified consumers recruited from a proprietary panel.
54 respondents who completed the full study.
A 7-day online activity board.
Approximately 30 minutes of diary tasks completed each day.
Structured activities exploring purchase habits, occasions, and category behaviour.
Feedback on brand and flavour expectations within the meat category.
Consumer decision-making around meat product choices.
The format allowed participants to reflect on real routines rather than rely on one-time recall. This digital diary research captured how meat products fit into meal planning, household usage, shopping decisions, flavour expectations, and product evaluation across different occasions.
The Impact of the Research
The study helped the client build a stronger understanding of how consumers approach meat product purchases in everyday life. It connected category behaviour with purchase occasions, brand expectations, flavour appeal, and decision triggers, adding depth to the meat consumer insights gathered through the research.
Key outcomes included:
Stronger understanding of meat product purchase habits and category routines.
Insight into the occasions that influence product selection.
Better visibility into brand and flavour expectations.
Behaviour-led feedback on how consumers evaluate meat products.
Direction for product positioning, category communication, and future innovation.
By capturing decisions within real food routines, the research helped the client connect everyday purchase behaviour with occasion-based needs and expectations that influence product relevance. These findings added stronger context to the client’s food market research and future category decisions.
